Over time the price of technology seems to go down as features are added and improved. This past summer I needed a new laptop. I found what I needed with touch screen,  the latest processor (Intel i5 4th gen), more memory and a bigger hard drive than I had before for just $450.00. That is 75% of the cost of the previous one. That doesn't seem to be the case with cell phones.

Quest for a Laptop

Obviously the most important tool for a web designer is a good computer. In fact more than one is a necessity. I primarily use a laptop with a desktop as my alternative. Last week the worst possible thing happened. The laptop died. I overlooked signs that there was a problem. It was running hotter and hotter as time went on. Finally it overheated and POOF! it was gone. On the positive side it was 5 years old so time for a new one anyway.

Upgrading from Windows XP 32-bit to Windows 8 64-bit

Although this isn't about web design, it is an important topic for millions with Windows XP. Since Microsoft ended support for Windows XP I figured it was time to jump on the Windows 8 bandwagon. The big question was whether I could do it.

My desktop is old, about 12 years. However it has been upgraded a couple of times. The most recent upgrade was 5 years ago. At that time I installed an Asus M3N78-VM motherboard with an AMD Quad Core 9650 processor. It seemed to me that updating to Windows 8 64-bit should be a piece of cake.
